New Village Academy is a charter school located in Annapolis, Maryland. A recent interior fit-out project is underway at the Westfield Annapolis Mall, transforming a previously mercantile space into a vibrant learning environment. The design draws inspiration from an interactive urban grid, with Learning Studios designed to mimic flexible city structures. The pathways connecting these studios are buzzing with idea exchanges, much like the lively streets of a city. Common areas evoke the feel of plazas or squares, with all routes leading to the central gathering space surrounding a “light well.” This center serves as the Academy’s vibrant heart, where sunlight streams through the Light Well, creating a warm glow and shifting shadows. Adjacent to the wooden tiered seating, a Ficus tree invites a sense of wisdom and serves as a tangible link to the natural world outside. This lively space fosters conversations, discussions, and the sharing of innovative ideas, creating a second home for growth, belonging, and collective aspirations for the future. Additionally, the project features a café that doubles as a multipurpose area for community gatherings, artistic activities, and performances, as well as serving as a lunch space. The light well is the main source of natural light, with classrooms and surrounding areas featuring windows that face it, enhancing connections to the outdoors. The benefits of daylighting include increased productivity, improved health, and energy savings, making it especially valuable in educational environments. To further enhance energy efficiency and invigorate teachers and students, all classrooms and spaces lacking natural light are equipped with Solatubes to ensure a bright, daylit atmosphere.
